Institute of Gerontology
The Institute of Gerontology at Wayne State University has established itself as a premier program intensively focused on research, advanced graduate and post-doctoral student training, community outreach and continuing education for health care providers. We began with a charter from the State of Michigan in 1965 with a directive to develop programs for “helping older people in the state.” We take that directive seriously, working closely with community partners and experts to promote successful aging in Detroit and beyond.
Join Giving Day to support our education mission. Michigan communities are growing older: the 65+ demographic is the fastest growing group, and we are ranked as 13th oldest in the US. Across all job sectors and community spaces, knowledge about aging and related issues can improve health and well-being for everyone.
The Institute of Gerontology helps to meet this need in two ways:
- The Community is Our Classroom. We deliver education for community members and training for health care professionals. Last year, we delivered over 250 programs with more than 50,000 attendees across the state.
- Training the Next Generation of Gerontologists. We have award-winning training programs for graduate students to have a research apprenticeship, and to deliver professional development for post-doctoral fellows as emerging leaders. In the last five years, we have helped launch careers of over 50 new scholars and professionals in gerontology
