AmeriCorps Community Training for Overdose Rescue (ACT)
The AmeriCorps Community Training for Overdose Rescue (ACT) program is working to save lives by reducing overdose deaths. ACT is doing this by increasing the availability and administration of publicly accessible naloxone – lifesaving medication – to reverse the effects of an overdose. During an overdose, opioids slow the respiratory system and can reduce or stop breathing, causing brain death in as little as three minutes. The immediate giving of naloxone by a bystander can increase survival. Through free, community-based training, AmeriCorps ACT volunteers teach community members to recognize overdoses and reverse them. Each member is provided with an Overdose Rescue Kit containing naloxone and shareable resource cards including local treatment, recovery support, and harm reduction services. ACT volunteers also install and maintain NaloxBoxes – public access points – that provide free naloxone where overdoses are likely to occur. Located throughout Wayne, Macomb, and Oakland counties, these access points ensure that help is available when and where it is needed the most.
