The Center for Latino/a and Latin American Studies (CLLAS) is one of the oldest scholarly units in the U.S. dedicated to the study of the Latina/o/x experience. With deep community roots and a commitment to excellence, CLLAS has played an important role in the education and development of leaders in Detroit, the Midwest, and beyond over its 55-year history.
- Join us in honoring Dr. Chinea for 30 years of service as he steps down as director of CLLAS in August by contributing to a scholarship endowment in his name: the Jorge L. Chinea Endowed Scholarship. As director of CLLAS and professor of history, Dr. Chinea has enriched the culture of the university through his academic accomplishments, service to the community and championing of students. Through this scholarship, we can ensure that Jorge’s legacy of uplifting students can continue in perpetuity.
This is an irrevocable gift and shall be used for establishing an endowed scholarship in Dr. Jorge Chinea's name at Wayne State University. If at any time in the judgment of Wayne State University it is impractical or impossible to carry out this purpose, then this gift shall be used at the discretion of Wayne State University for such other purpose as the university determines to be consistent with the Dr. Jorge Chinea endowed scholarship.
In the unlikely event that the amount received does not meet the minimum funding threshold to establish a named endowed or expendable fund under University Policy, 04-4 Private Support For Named Professorships, Scholarships, Academic And Educational Programs And Endowed Chairs, then the university will not be required to establish the fund, and it will transfer the amount received to a spending account for use in a manner they determine to be consistent with the donors interests and intentions. Individuals that make a gift to this fund agree that their gifts may be redirected to a fund that most closely resembles the endowed fund.
