We are proud of the accomplishments of our faculty and students as we review the history and highlights of the C.S. Mott Center since it opened in 1973. These efforts have led to excellence in research, clinical training and education for the Wayne State University School of Medicine. This year we continue to bring enormous opportunity for research success, collaboration and increased educational and training programs. The C.S. Mott Center has experienced tremendous and continual growth in federal research funding since 2021, which has positioned us to expand our overall mission and vision. The Center is thriving in its mission of applying translational research and providing resources to our community through service, clinical trials, awareness, and engagement. We are excited about sharing the success and future plans of the C.S. Mott Center that is attainable because of the generosity of our donors.
C.S. Mott Center Annual Fund
The C.S. Mott Center has set the foundation of research excellence through the hard work, dedication and expertise of our faculty and students. Your donation provides the flexibility to fund our areas of greatest need, to embrace opportunities as they arise and support our mission to actively contribute to the community as the leading translational center for reproductive health. The C.S. Mott Center promotes research training relating to women’s and children’s health with a focus on reproductive biology, immunology, oncology, toxicology and prenatal medicine. Our scientists are shaping the understanding of how human beings' health is molded even before the fetus begins to grow. We integrate basic, translational and clinical research with the purpose of improving women’s health. We have the infrastructure in place to actively contribute to the community as the leading translational center to engage our unique urban environment as we approach reproductive life sciences from bench to bedside and into the community. We are about breaking down barriers and unifying the necessary technologies with expert physician-scientists and the patients we serve.
Preterm Birth Care & Prevention
According to recent data, Detroit received an F grade for having the highest preterm birth rate among all United States cities, with a rate of 15.1% (March of Dimes, 2022). This statistic highlights the urgent need for targeted interventions and preventive measures in the region. The program seeks to enhance diagnostic tools and methods to accurately predict preterm birth, enabling early identification of high-risk pregnancies and personalized care plans. The Preterm Birth Program also fosters the development of innovative interventions with the goal of preventing preterm birth or minimizing its consequences.
By focusing on the health of men and women during their reproductive years and the impact of the environment on their reproductive success, these pro-active steps during will benefit the health of their children and future generations.
Discovery to Cure High School Internship Program
The Discovery to Cure program provides high-quality life science research experience at Wayne State University to high school students and exposes them to the excitement of biomedical research careers. This robust 8-week summer program allows the students to experience working at the bench and learn all the basics of laboratory safety while being mentored by our faculty. This year we have received over 160 applications for just 18 spots. The program is geared towards High School students with the intention of providing high-quality life science research experience to qualified applicants and exposing them to the excitement and potential of a biomedical research career. The rigorous Discovery to Cure program creates meaningful research and mentorship opportunities for high school students and teachers, and your collaboration can provide impactful resources for the C.S. Mott Center and its talented team to encourage and engage even more students as the next generation of life science researchers. While the current times may be challenging and may limit some of our activities, your support is essential in helping us sustain our growth and expand our educational and research efforts.
