CLAS Psychology Clinic

  • Ready! Set! Give! Once 20 donors give to the CLAS Psychology Clinic, a generous $1,000 gift from Dean Stephanie Hartwell will be unlocked!

The Psychology Clinic is requesting donations to install a duress system in our clinic. This will provide “panic buttons” in each clinic office that can be used to alert campus police in case of an emergency.

Our training clinic is staffed by doctoral students in the clinical psychology area. These students provide services in the clinic beginning in their first year and ending when they leave the WSU campus for internship in their fifth or sixth year. We provide both therapy and psychological assessments to members of the campus as well as community members from the metro Detroit area ranging from early childhood to older adulthood. We have approximately 30 students providing services to one to three clients at any given point throughout the academic year. While telehealth services were used during the pandemic, we currently require students to see clients in person in the clinic unless there are extenuating circumstances. Our clinic is open 50 hours per week, including two evenings where we are open until 7:00 pm and two evenings where we are open until 8:00 pm. This is because many of our clients require after school/work or evening hours for therapy and assessment. However, we only have front office coverage for 32 hours per week.

Currently, if an emergency arises during a session with a client, the graduate student trainee is to call the front office of the clinic. We occasionally deal with disgruntled clients and this can cause our student trainees to feel unsafe. Further, the main entrance of our clinic is not consistently monitored when there is no front office staff, and this door is easily accessible to anyone passing by on Cass Avenue. We have not experienced any significant emergencies, but we have had unknown people walking through our building. We would prefer to be proactive in addressing potential emergent situations rather than reacting after something has occurred. The proposed duress system would greatly improve our preparedness for an emergency and increase our student trainees’ feelings of safety when in the clinic.
