Hilberry Gateway and Gretchen C. Valade Jazz Center
Newly constructed, the Hilberry
Gateway project ushers in a new era of live performance in Detroit. Years of
planning have helped sharpen the vision for this performing arts complex in the
heart of Midtown. More than a performance space, the facilities build on our
nearly 60-year legacy of performing arts education. A training ground for
actors, dancers, musicians, designers, stage managers, and theatre managers,
the Hilberry Gateway is the latest evolution of Wayne State’s outstanding
performing arts programs.
The Gretchen C. Valade Jazz Center is set to open by September 2024. Following an extensive renovation of the prior Hilberry Theatre building, this center houses a main hall designed specifically for jazz performance and a club-style venue, Dee Dee Bridgewater’s. These spaces will create a new home for jazz performances, jam sessions, jazz workshops, jazz films, and other Department of Music and college and community activities on campus in the heart of the cultural center.
Your support of these incredible performing arts spaces is an investment in Wayne State and Detroit’s cultural life. Please make your gift today to continue our momentum and activate these artistic resources for students, faculty, staff and community members alike. We look forward to welcoming you to the Hilberry Gateway and the Gretchen C. Valade Jazz Center and celebrating your support in making this project possible from the ground up.
