DEIA Acquisitions Graduate Internship
Since the invention of moveable type around 1040 CE in China, books and written material have served an important role in communication, research, and leisure activities. In addition to making important contributions to humanities and social science research and supporting the careers of scholars and writers, Wayne State University Press most strongly achieves its mission when publishing activities are informed by the principles of inclusivity, equity, and access. Building communities around books and literacy is vital to the achievement of our mission. Book publishing historically has been staffed through apprenticeship, where college students and recent graduates train for jobs by completing an unpaid internship with a publisher. This legacy practice excludes everyone who needs to devote time to paid work, most often students and graduates from minoritized communities.
With support from you, WSU Press can continue to offer paid opportunities for early career Detroiters to learn skills of value to publishers and to many other employers. Since 2021, Giving Day funds have enabled us to pay for part-time work experiences for a recent graduate and a WSU undergraduate, and to hire a student for a year. Also appreciated are general operating funds, which help us insure day-to-day operations of the press with the thin margins of book publishing and the whims of book sales.
