Ride for Discovery: 100 Miles to Support Student Research at Wayne State

On September 19, the Wayne State community will come together on Belle Isle for Ride for Discovery — a 100-mile cycling challenge supporting student research, learning and professional development.

This year’s ride benefits students through two areas at Wayne State University: the Department of Environmental Science and Geology and the Barber Center for Multiscale Systems Biology. While their areas of study are different, both share a common goal: creating meaningful opportunities for students to learn through research, pursue new discoveries and share their work with the broader scientific community.

Choose the area that is most meaningful to you — or support both — and help Wayne State students take their learning beyond the classroom.

Support Environmental Science and Geology

Gifts to the Department of Environmental Science and Geology will help students participate in fieldwork, research and professional development opportunities.

Funds raised through Ride for Discovery will support:

• Student travel to field camp and conferences
• Student research activities
• Emergency assistance for students in need

These experiences give students opportunities to apply what they learn, develop their skills and connect their studies to the world around them.

Support the Barber Center for Multiscale Systems Biology

Gifts to the Barber Center for Multiscale Systems Biology will expand undergraduate research opportunities and help students share their work with the scientific community.

Funds raised will support:

• Supplies for undergraduate research projects
• Student travel to national scientific conferences
• Hands-on research training
• Opportunities to connect and engage with the broader STEM community

Your support helps students gain valuable experience as researchers while contributing to discovery at Wayne State.

Join us on Belle Isle

Giving is only one way to be part of Ride for Discovery. Join the Wayne State community on Belle Isle to ride, cheer on participants or simply spend part of the day with us.

Cyclists will ride approximately 5-mile laps around Belle Isle. Whether you want to tackle one lap, several laps or the full 100 miles, you are welcome to ride alongside us.

Our home base will be Shelter 15, on the south side of Belle Isle near the restrooms on Woodside Drive. Riders and supporters can gather there throughout the day for food, snacks, beverages and a chance to recharge.

Ride day schedule

• Ride begins: 6 a.m. at Shelter 15
• Ride and picnic: Throughout the day at Shelter 15
• Ride concludes: Approximately 3 p.m.
• Shelter gathering: Through 4 p.m.
• Celebration: 5-7 p.m. at the Detroit Yacht Club, Sunset Point

Following the ride, participants and supporters are invited to gather at the Detroit Yacht Club to celebrate the miles traveled, the research being advanced and the community that made it possible.

There are many ways to take part

Make a gift. Support the Environmental Science and Geology fund, the Barber Center for Multiscale Systems Biology fund or both.

Ride with us. Join for approximately 5 miles, the full 100-mile challenge or anything in between.

Cheer on the riders. Stop by Shelter 15, spend some time on Belle Isle and encourage participants as they complete their laps.

Spread the word. Share Ride for Discovery with friends, family and fellow Warriors and help more people learn about the student research happening at Wayne State.

However you participate, you are part of a community helping Wayne State students explore, discover and put their knowledge into action.
