The National Organization for the Professional Advancement of Black Chemists and Chemical Engineers (NOBCChE) is an organization dedicated to the recruitment, retention, and uplifting of black students and other individuals from underrepresented backgrounds in chemistry, chemical engineering, and associated interdisciplinary fields in STEM. All donors and alumni are invited to participate in this project, as part of a series of annual programs designed to fulfill the mission of recruiting, retaining and uplifting NOBCChE members, the University community, and the larger Detroit metro area.
The two major aspects of this project are the NOBCChE Lecture Series, and the K-12 STEM Outreach Program.
The NOBCChE Lecture Series is a reflection and celebration of the achievements of Black chemists in academia and industry. In addition to technical talks given by prestigious researchers from around the world, this program provides an opportunity for NOBCChE members and the entire WSU community to share their research, learn from, and network with the invited speakers through individual meetings and a group luncheon. These meetings help to foster future collaborative opportunities for WSU scholars and advance the academic reputation of our university.
The WSU-NOBCChE Chapter has a rich history of graduate and undergraduate-level programming, university service, and community outreach. In deepening the dedication to strengthening awareness of STEM fields through outreach, a K-12 STEM Outreach Program was established with several elementary and middle schools within the Detroit area. This K-12 Engagement Program is focused on four main events: Tutoring, Career talks, STEM demonstrations, and University visits. These events aim to increase accessibility to STEM education resources, create a network to develop young people’s work ethic, navigate the higher education system, and emphasize the importance of diverse perspectives in advancing scientific innovation.
As the donor, I understand that it is the intention of Wayne State University (WSU) to use my gift, along with contributions from others, to establish an expendable support fund for the National Organization for the Professional Advancement of Black Chemists and Chemical Engineers (NOBCChE), a registered student organization (RSO) in the Department of Chemistry. Membership in WSU RSOs is open to all currently registered WSU students per the Wayne State University Non-Discrimination Policy.
I understand that if the total amount raised from this fundraising effort does not meet the minimum funding threshold required to establish a named expendable support fund under University Policy 04-4, the university will not be obligated to create the fund. I agree that the university may transfer my gift to the Chemistry General Research and Development Fund, to be used at the discretion of the Chair of the Department of Chemistry.
